REVISITING OBREDIMET
SEPTMEBER 2016 - REVISITING DESIGN PROCESS:
After visiting the People's Community Garden (PCG) and the Norwich community garden getting in touch I decided to put the two herb gardens to bed. Passing them on to others to look after. OBREDIMET 2 made simple.
Observations: Pat at the PCG is really keen on looking after the herb spiral and wants tea herbs. They want it simple, easy to manage and they will get some new labels. A date was set for October 3rd and I spent an hour weeding and seeing what was there with Pat to prepare the way. They had already weeded it so not much to do. A list of herbs that they would need made up and we are all set for the October date when I will bring plants and we can transform the herb spiral.
The Rosemary hedge/ fence (fedge) is massive now and worked really well. The bay are a bit sporadic and some now huge and others dead. The other herbs to have survived well were Southernwood, Curry plants and soapwort.
Boundaries: My time is the main thing here and working for free. I will make sure I leave a sign advertising me as a herbalist.
Resources: It is really lovely to reconnect with the place and I am happy to volunteer. I will make sure that anything I spend money buying I pass on and will invoice for any of my plants in case they get some donations.
Evaluate: As the herb spiral was a huge part of my legacy it is really good to keep it going in good form. I am aware that if I had lots of work on I'd have to decline doing this but since I have time I will use it productively.
I have learnt that there are no wet areas as the soil is fairly light so at top and bottom of spiral it is all fairly dry. Light and shade still relevant and height of planting needs looking at with tea herbs being picked closer to the path.
Design: I am trying to pass the knowledge and skills onto other people so coming with a prepared plan is not my aim. Rather to get those taking over to make decisions and place plants. There are several seedlings and things already there which can be used too so making use of them is important.
Plants I want to introduce (based on my tea garden list) are:
Lemon Verbena buy 3
Calendula (via seeds I have)
Vervain - buy 1 or dig up one of mine)
Skullcap - dig up from mine.
liquorice buy
Echinacea buy
Fennel - on site? or dig up mine.
Mints - dig up some of mine.
Chamomile (perennial) buy or see if divide mine.
Parsley - label an area and get them to sow seeds.
Elecampane from me in centre. (they have a small one)
St. Johns wort (they have some)
They have thymes.
consider moving curry plant and southernwood as hedge
Consider whips of elder in hedge too.
Consider a rose.
dig up sorrel and move to back of culinary herb area.
Implementation: October 3rd. 10- 2pm
hot water and cups already there. Risk assessments on site already.
Invite people to join in. Consider using the clay oven?
Ensure signage done that day. Black labels with white pens. My signage. Include a picture of finished article.
Maintenance: check how it is going in spring next year.
Evaluate: Ask for feedback
Tweek: Make a design including drawing and price with maintenance instructions if asked to repeat the process with a new person.
