REFLECTIONS on MARLEPIT HERB GARDEN- Norwich
I am trying to think about the deisgn method used in planting this garden. I certainly had learnt about OBREDIMET AND SADIMET. I think we naturally absorb these methodologies and then naturally and quickly move through the stages as we become more accomplished/ at ease with them.
Part of the observations and issues I have had with Labelling was noticing the paving slabs as ways to record what was where. See table underneath.

The Marl Pit Community garden was a partner project to the Norwich Mini Allotment Plots. I was able to work there once a month to keep the plants tended and add in several new ones along the path. I was well chuffed to use the paving slabs to number the areas in the above table so even if a label faded or got lost in the growth I could know what varieties were where. Amazing soil there led to lovely crops.
Placement of plants done into medicinal, pizza herbs, nice other herbs, Mediterranean herbs. This was in part a way to categorise the types of herbs and make it accessible to visitors. pizza nearest the hub, then herb tea plants then culinary. Pretty lavenders to greet people as they first entered. Had I thought about it - as I evaluate the design now - maybe the first thing people should come across are edibles so local residents could just pick and go.... pros and cons.
Evaluating the design: It worked, it took 3 hours a month to keep on top of the weeds. It still inspires. But longer term thinking I am not sure how it will fair the in the future without me there. Some plants will be lost I think. SO WITHOUT A CLEAR DESIGN THAT CAN BE DISPLAYED, THE LIFE OF THE DESIGN IS LIMITED.
SIGNAGE IS EVERYTHING, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS MEANT TO BE EDUCATIONAL.
I TAKE THIS LEARNING TO BECOME A BETTER DESIGNER.
