Education and A SCHOOL GARDEN
THIS IS NOT A DESIGN FOR THE DIPLOMA..... BUT I WILL BE STARTING TEACHER TRAINING IN SEPT 2019 SO IT IS ON MY PERMARADAR!
WHAT ABOUT A DESIGN METHOD?
I came across this action learning cycle and it struck me as what I had been doing..... For a project that I have been working on for a long time. I have been in a training co-operative since 2008 and I wanted a way to work in permaculture design to my education work. I came across the action learning cycle and finds it can pick up what I have done and helps plan for the future. In short a design process that can fit the evolution of my ideas.
INITIAL OBSERVATIONS
Having had experience from the previous designs I encourage myself to design in the interface between people and land. Somewhere that is real, and helps me with the work I do.
THINK
I had worked for Creative Partnerships as a gardener in several schools and overseen outdoor learning projects so I knew it would be worth exploring new school relationships. I have also been in a workers co-operative helping to train on issues such as fair trade, school programmes including setting up allotments social enterprise weeks.
DESIGN ideas:
Education of Children in a permaculture garden....
Design of the garden
Design of how to teach in the garden
DO:
When I was considering moving to Old Hall in Suffolk I wrote to schools nearby seeing if any were up for using my experience as a school gardener/ permaculture designer as I had I had a favourable response from one school, so when I did actually move I had a project to get stuck into.

OBERSERVATIONS
STAGE 1: SCHOOL GARDENING CLUB 2015
At this stage I wasn't thinking about doing a permaculture design. I was very happy to be getting paid to run an afterschool gardening club. It was called THE GREEN HAND GANG. I even secured funding for tools.

Getting images is hard as I only used school i pads to take pictures. And do not have access to them. The header frame comes from the school website.
STAGE 2: OFFER OF JOB- TEACHING ASSIsTANT 2016
Having thought about being a primary teacher and then the facilitation experience in a training co-operative a chance chat with the head lead to an offer of a job. One day a week as a teaching assistant. This involved classroom support for all age groups 5-11 and the chance to go outside more than just the afterschool club. This is when I came up with more ideas about the school garden.
THINK- SEtting SOme AIMS
My Aims for 2016 are:
1) enjoy planning lessons with new timetable for my day. Develop skill of planning 30 min activities working with teachers and evaluate how it is going.
2) Getting whole school/ pupils/ parents to learn gardening & permaculture design.
3) Food For Life, Eco Schools, RHS School Gardening, Garden Design. Curriculum links.
4) Where do I go next? funding bids for extra development of this work or become teacher?

I wanted to be clear on what I wanted to achieve so some aims seemed sensible as well as developing myself as an educator. The below plans helped me share my vision with staff and gave a timetable to thinks about logistics of which pupils & which activities etc.
DO
I got stuck in with the plan but every week I had to be flexible as school life changed any plans. Many activities needed to wait whilst something else happened or for the right time of year. The pupils loved the various activities and in this setting up phase of the school gardens and we muddled though. As well as gardening I was involved with classroom teaching and the life of the school.

JANUARY 2017 REVIEW OF:
My Aims for 2016.
1) enjoy planning lessons with new timetable for my day. Develop skill of planning 30 min activities working with teachers and evaluate how it is going.
This has been a key learning for me that I can't work the whole class in one hour every session. In fact small groups doing tasks can be disruptive to the class as they leave, jackets, boots, re-enter class wash hands. It can work well though so it does help to have clear activities ready planned. Of course planing with the teacher is the best albeit rare. Teachers are stressed and made me feel that I added to the stress. I realised that it was much more satisfying to have 4 pupils for an hour and really allow them to explore the garden and act upon ideas.
2) Getting whole school/ pupils/ parents to learn gardening & permaculture design
At the moment I plan things. Any overall design morphs and I see my role as picking up on themes that the pupils come up with. Framing questions and asking open exploratory questions about what to do in an area. I did not manage to get parents involved and however keen they were they were also too busy. A few "dig days" were fun with good results. I realised that being in the garden as parents walked by in the morning and afternoon was the best way to share thoughts on the garden. I found that I was the one with the overall design in my head and I could share parts of it. It was about explaining everything so the pupils understood e.g. wheelbarrowing the pile of woodchip to keep the weeds down and to still allow the lawnmower of the maintenance contractors an easy route.
3) Food For Life, Eco Schools, RHS School Gardening, Garden Design. Curriculum links.
This went fantastically and became a core part of my work. Isoon realised the power of an award scheme and how much tick boxes are a reality in schools. We did brilliantly but I was aware how much relied on me for the steering.
4) Where do I go next? funding bids for extra development of this work or become teacher?
Awards for All funding bid left with governors and never heard of again. AONB open? No plans to be a teacher. Developing the work with curriculum links, involving parents, staff and locals. Cluster training for the other schools in the area and other Food For Life schools.

- We were close to the Soil Association's Bronze Food For Life and with just lots of work on food and cooking classes missing. In the winter we achieved our Bronze award and school caterers contracts meant we couldn't proceed to silver without big changes.
- Eco Schools Silver fairly quickly. Update a Green Flag Award in Summer 2017
- RHS Gardening for Schools Awards were started. Update we achieved top Level 5 by Summer 2017.
- Garden Design competitions at RHS Hyde Hall and The Suffolk Show led to awards and great fun.
- Curriculum links faltered as I discovered that at one day a week It was hard to do it all. The garden did what it could when it could and provided much needed SATS rest bite as well as alternative skills and social development for the pupils.
THINK
Some evaluation of the situation by Easter 2017. I was realising that in my life generally I have many strands and people often said to me " are you spreading yourself too thin?". I noticed I wasn't being enthusiastic about going to school and the kids were starting to annoy me (BIG WARNING SIGN). I was being asked to do paytime duty and lunchtime supervising, had no breaks between 8.15 and 1 and missed the social side of the staffroom and being in only one day I felt outside of school life anyway. Everything I needed to do with the kids involved talking to teachers to plan and I started feeling unwelcome. I concentrated on getting the awards we had started and leaving everything in a place that could be picked up by another teacher if needed.
I think I knew I wanted to be doing more with my life and I had found myself embedded in a place that was lovely but not my potential.
I think I knew I wanted to be doing more with my life and I had found myself embedded in a place that was lovely but not my potential.
DESign
So I had to step up and either make the school gardening my life and find other schools , create more after school clubs and develop a practice of permaculture training for kids or evaluate what is important to me.
I did try and introducing the action learning cycle into the school, exploring how to make it useful to children in the gardening and design work we were doing. So I made these signs that went up in the garden.
DO
I did try using these to design our 3m by 3m Suffolk Show garden but It was really hard to make it their design ideas work and I take this as a failing on my part at not having patience and enough time to devote to the show garden. As summer term rolled on I realised that I was a herbalist and not a school gardener. I loved the enthusiasm from the kids but felt I was an oddball in the culture of the school. Support from the head was there but not the leadership and on near minimum wage 6 hours a week i was not willing to lead a whole school programme.
July 2017:
I gave in my notice. I had learnt a lot and with the school achieved a lot. RHS level 5 Gardening School Award, Food For Life Bronze and Eco School Green Flag award. We created show gardens and most importantly helped to foster a love of outdoor learning.

ACTION LEARNING CYCLE 2017 - POST SCHOOL
OBSERVE:
- I have achieved a lot at the school and I have learnt a lot.
- I realise I felt a little trapped in a low hours, low pay situation but more importantly I was very part time and I felt that I was the only one that cared for the garden so by working there I was finding it hard to survive financially and to have energy to devote to other projects and I was not sure how much I was being valued.
- I was relieved at not having every Wednesday in my diary taken up.
- I felt sad that the garden had just been left, and a derelict garden makes the entrance to the school feel unloved- So far it is just derelict but there will be a time when it gets cleared and put back to grass.
- I missed the kids
- I think of how to design my exit in a better way.
- I was told they would keep me on the books as a session worker.
Think
I found Aranya's school garden design (see below document). He struggled with funding and his time.

I think my struggle was implementing the garden design and facilitating it for the pupils to do it.
I would have been much simpler to do it myself.
The point was to do it with the children and staff and parents.
Once the garden was up and running the focus could have been about using the garden rather than building it. Either way children just love being in it.

Do I want to go back? Not regularly but Id love to keep the connection.
How can help the garden to work for the school? What level of maintenance can the school manage with?
Is there overlap with my ideas of Herbaconsultancy? If I wanted future work designing school gardens for health then maybe this would be important to explore?
Can I come up with a proposal that is WIN WIN Lets see....

DESIGN:
USING SMART TOOL:
S- Specific:
USING SMART TOOL:
S- Specific:
- Tidy up the "Front Garden"
- Create project for a specific group
- just certain areas e.g. 3m x 3m and Minecraft bed.
- how to know if it worked? Maths skills? social interaction? What is useful to measure?
- Before and after photos. I realise that due to safeguarding I didn't take photos so I need to build in photos to show what i have done (without children).
- Using school funds for my time.
- how long till approval?
- Allow the maintenance contractors to be primary future keepers.
- choose manageable crops/ projects
- It is now November. This needs to be a short proposal.
MY SCHOOL HERBACULTURE PILOT IDEA:
- Design Idea: Focus on growing limited crops in the Minecraft garden and 3m by 3m in the front garden only.
- Implementation Idea: Specific group of pupils (one class or year) school to decide..
- Photos before and after.
- Evaluation to fit teachers existing aims.
- Agreed number of days time.
- Ensure Maintenance for the area is easy (agreed with contractors.
- MINECRAFT IDEA: Daffodils of different varieties for Easter &or Mothers Day. Worked well in other areas.
- Daffodils latest in January (Dan away in Feb) preferable asap in November.
- 3by3 IDEA: Lettuces of different varieties in a grid which can be designed by the pupils.
- Incorporate the design tools I simplified (above pic).
- School can harvest themselves and choose enterprise project to sell/ use flowers themselves.
- Herbaculture? Health benefits of caring for others with flowers. Eating the lettuce or another crop in a cooking lesson? Offer future classes on health topics. Trial my new programmes on the school?
- Tidy up days needed
- Budget to be proposed.
DO: Create Proposal document which include a page on the principles and how to explain to client about permaculture principles.
SWOC: SCHOOL HERBACULTURE PILOT
Strengths:
SWOC: SCHOOL HERBACULTURE PILOT
Strengths:
- already connected with the school. Have Payment code. Going to xmas dinner.
- Specific pupils, area and time to do it in.
- Being paid near minimum wage. Ensure planning time accounted for. Funding Bid for extra?
- who pays for extra costs of materials etc ? May need a funding bid?
- Trial the design process for kids
- Lead to other work with health and kids?
- Get funding to run school activities.
- It gets lost with other work taking priority
- the length of time it takes things to grow affecting a growing process. Buy plug plants?
- No school interest. Find out at start if teachers can link to it so not stand alone. Give time for watering etc.
- I need to use my previous experiences I have had with this and other school gardens in the observation stages
- Then evaluate it and think about what SCHOOL GARDENING/ PERMACULTURE EDUCATION means to me and how it can fit in my life .
- Design / Dream up how incorporate education, and designing for organisational clients.
- Finally either do it, or having decided not to do , use my time, money and energy on other things.
2nd CYCLE
OBSERVE
- I went to the school and saw that the two wooden raised bed areas had been taken down and the maintenance contractors has cleared the site back to easy to maintain grass.
- The letter I sent had not been looked at and although pleasant the school was not interested anymore.
- So no funds are available to continue with designing for the school. I have lost my mojo for continues working there and it really does show how fragile a school garden is without garden loving staff to continue it.
THINK
- How can what I have learnt here help with this part of Herbaculture CIC ideas?
- Was it easier focusing on a specifics area to teach permaculture design methods with the kids?
- A Land based design done by the kids?
- How could I get a school to pay for me over a whole year? I hate short term project that come to nothing?
- If intending to work with institutions I must ensure that it is sustainable or my involvement is clear. e.g. I just do the design, get paid, make the maintenance responsibility clear in the design. I know that some training in gardening skills is key as well. In my school setting there was a maintenance company. With an absolutely clear plan I could have got more support and crucially asked for help at various stages. This is big learning for me.
DESIGN
When designing:
- Participation and Inclusion of those the design involves. Client Interview, enthusiasm from staff etc.
- Informed reality of what is achievable.... but don't lose inspirational ideas.
- Use of Permaculture principles to steer design process.
- Clear demarkation between doing a design and implementing it.
- Implementation process can be long. Is this the fun bit that folk enjoy? Be clear!
- Maintenance of the site includes keeping it functional but also how to use the space.
DO
Link to Design 9. herbaconsultancy - these ideas are crucial for a professional design service.
2018 Observation
From my experience working with school for the last 10 years (two teaching assistant jobs in the last 3 years), my PTTLS training in Adult education, The First Question Co-op facilitation work and the community gardening experience I feel a strong sense of connection to education and I need to reassess this.
THINKING
In the Education Sector of the Venn Diagram I had ideas that I could have been a full time teacher. This is now not the case. In the sweet spot of the intersects between herbalism, permaculture and Education I have a part time teaching role - this is also not going to happen in terms of school.
What is likely to happen is keeping aspects of education in mind when thinking of herbal medicine training for the public, apprentices. Running workshops relating to future social enterprise ideas whilst keeping the focus to herbal medicine.
If offering my design skills to create designs for schools and businesses ensure it realates to herbs or wellbeing and be clear if it is with or without the implementation and maintenance.
Be clear why offering separate distinct implementation and maintenance and facilitating the use of the gardens is so important.

DESIGNING
Designing my next steps in this Education part of my life needs help..... I call on the Ethics and Principles......
PERMACULTURE ETHICS AND PRINCIPLES
People Care: Education fits this. But how can I best do this..... work on teaching herbalism?
(Update: Community Health Clubs design)
Fairshare: Valuing my time and helping me "not spread myself too thin". Have a response if asked to work with schools again? i.e. Id love to, this is what I can offer!
(Update: this feed to the herbaconsultancy design)
Earthcare: Creating regenerative plots where nature learning takes place.
(Update : links to the magic garden design)
Holmgren's Principles:
Observe and Interact: I have been doing lots of observation about working in schools and the ability to relate permaculture directly to the work in the school garden. I feel the need to be more professional and take control of my life to create my herbaculture business. I realise the futility of being half hearted.
Catch and Store Energy: The writing up of this diploma feels like I haven't wasted any experience. I created folders at the school to record everything but have not got access to them now. Informing future practice is the aim of learning and It will help form the designs I wish to do on my business.
Obtain a Yield: PETTLS adult edcuation. Peer Mentoring course. The school awards.
Apply Self regulation and accept feedback: I am trying not to spread myself too thin. I am trying to be fully committed to herbaculture. Maybe I need to reflect more and ask for help/ advice more.
Use and Value Renewable Resources and Services: Remember its all about the plants!
Produce no waste: Keeping a tight focus on herbaculture.
Design from Patterns to Details: Venn helped to focus my thoughts.
Integrate rather than segregate: using my experiences to join many strands into education of herbaculture is fantastic but complicated. So more work needed here on how to make it less complicated.
Slow and small solutions: This has been rumbling on for a long time. I realise that education is part of sharing ones passions.
Use and Value diversity: I can do anything as long as I am clear at the start how to keep it relevant to my aims.
Use Edges and Value the Marginal: Working with children, It was all about surfing the edges and being able to change directions where needed. This is when I learnt most.
Creatively use and respond to change: I think this process has been a good example of responding to changes creatively and I look forward to where I go next.

I have explored various courses to help me. I have had permaculture diploma tutorials. I booked myself onto a garden design course starting April. I will explore the technical drawing options whilst there.

EVALUATION OF ACTION LEARNING CYCLE
Im not sure how to evaluate the permaculture design process into this though.
Evaluation of the initial aims:
1) enjoy planning lessons with new timetable for my day. Develop skill of planning 30 min activities working with teachers and evaluate how it is going.
2) Getting whole school/ pupils/ parents to learn gardening & permaculture design.
3) Food For Life, Eco Schools, RHS School Gardening, Garden Design. Curriculum links.
4) Where do I go next? funding bids for extra development of this work or become teacher?
1) yes, smaller numbers for longer led to real benefits. The more the teachers involved the more everyone benefits. Being clear with teachers helped them.
2) Most pupils got into the garden and had fun but no actual design lessons took place. This does need great interaction with teachers.
3) Perhaps a little too FOCUSED ON THESE AWARDS! we got them all.
4) I did have plans to continue with after-school clubs but it was not financially viable.
I enjoyed my time working in schools, my focus has moved onto community settings and social herbaculture.
I still have an idea to cost and plan out a specific gardening project.
Allows gathering of a project over time.
4 sections make it simple. Good to remember the detail of OBREDIMET and include if needed.

REflections on MY DEVELOPMENT AS A DESIGNER
Trying out new ideas. Still retro fitting write up these designs.
I read in Terry Laughlin's obituary in the EconomistNov18th 2017 of his categorisation of swimmers in their development:
Although I am aware of the lack of conventional land based pretty drawings I feel I am beginning to get to Conscious Competence in my design process.
I find I still have lightbulb moments or serendipitous cross pollination of ideas from radio, conversations and chance readings which I would like to explore more. Am I able to create the right climate for such inspirations? I feel this is a part of who I am e.g. a green hat thinker http://www.debonogroup.com/six_thinking_hats.php
I read in Terry Laughlin's obituary in the EconomistNov18th 2017 of his categorisation of swimmers in their development:
- Unconscious Incompetence- you don't realise what is amiss.
- Conscious Incompentence- you spot what is wrong and stop doing it.
- Conscious Competence - you do the right thing but only with effort
- Unconscious Competence - the mental equivalent of automatic pilot.
