HErbal Gardening - Community Health Clubs
As a Medical Herbalist using plants to treat patients, I want to be showcasing a community example of what plants as medicines could do.
I have a background in community facilitation, was in an educational co-operative and have been involved in community gardens for over 10 years. I want to work alongside GP's with social prescribing.
I also refer you to previous inspiration I had on this theme about Community Supported Herbal Medicine in appendix 8.3
INITAL AIMS OF COMMUNITY HEALTH CLUBS:
Community Health Clubs would ideally take referrals from GPs, local link co-ordinators or approved self referrals and monitor participant's health over time. Groups (similar symptoms or totally mixed), would learn about their bodies, their health issues, diet and lifestyle. This could be linked to the 'in vogue' group consultation idea (10 diabetes patients see GP for an hour). Based in the community or in a GP surgery garden the group would also learn to grow food and medicinal plants and prepare food and simple herbal medicines for continued health needs. I am proposing community gardening with specific groups, specific timeframes and measured outcomes.

INITAL AIMS OF COMMUNITY HEALTH CLUBS:
- Run courses on Herbal Medicine
- Help people to get inspired by gardening
- Grow the herbs that help with health
- Inspire the cooking and healthy eating and living with herbs.
- Get support from peers and get a sense of purpose helping your community to grow.

I often seem to come up with plans late at night or to procrastinate from other less exciting work. So I type up a plan, read it through and change things, get a few opinions and change a few things more. I would never want to quell such dynamic creativity but afterwards a simple design process would be useful to help form ideas into a plan. The below diagram comes from nurturegreen.wordpress.com which to me clearly explains how various design processes could be formed over time. This Action Learning Cycling, I learnt later, was an established methodology in Permaculture based on Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle.
So from an Idea I wanted to explore why I had not taken it any further. In 2014 I decided that to record the progress of this idea over time with likely gaps in enthusiasm, I'd use a formal methodology so as to apply permaculture design fully.
For the sake of clarity the Design Question is:
Designing a Community Health Club?

DESIGN METHODOLOGY: DESIGN CYCLING
Observe:
What are the blocks to it happening?
Facilitation, GP time, venue, money, client groups. security of where I live, Other observations?
Think:
What is the vision?
Having an example of Community Health Clubs. Can I picture it, Have I seen it in other places already working?
Design:
Try a way to progress the project.
Need to revisit the Soul to Soil doc? (these are the above documents.
Do:
Twitter, GP letter, talking to people, link to this page, create a sample timetable. Source potential funding. Source client groups: Breathe Easy Lung Group; HIV groups; young mums; unemployed men?
Change those four headings to:
1) Observe/ Evaluate:
how did it go? how do I feel? What Have I learnt? has the vision changed?
2) Think
Next set of aims/ priorities. Space to think/ create.
3) Design/Plan:
the creative process leading to a plan.

2014
Feb 2014: Community Garden Week. Phoned, emailed, visited, talked funding bids, made other contacts including life coach/ pilates/ meditation Sue, paid for GP commissioning conference, found perfect community garden Venue,
Observations from this week?
Mind, Strong roots and Marl pit lane. 3 gardening projects all keen for volunteers
Might I need more training to be a councellor?
Funding viable- Mahesh wise enough to let me know?
Think/ Evaluate?
Just do it without getting paid for now
speak to GP's
Im looking for work so it may scupper plans.
Design/ Plan?
set up own social enterprise?
Do/ Next steps:
speak to GP's
start and see if works out.

I STALLED ON THIS IDEA in 2014. NEXT DESIGN CYCLE 2017
JANUARY 2017
1) Observe/ Evaluate:
how did it go? how do I feel? What Have I learnt? has the vision changed?
1a) Observations: Reading the above Feb 2014 ideas look ambitious and unlikely without help or direction. The draft proposals that I did in 2013 one late night when I had inspiration were tweaked again it is amazing how a little insight can take an idea and make it fit the current situation.
UPDATE:
A Sudbury based Community horticulture Job has sparked off in me the idea that the Community Health Clubs could happen. Linked into the wider world of councils, partners and with funding attached. Exciting!
1b) On a smaller scale I have ideas for gardening for wellbeing. At Quay Place Ipswich, Marl pit Norwich, Flatford gardens and Stratford school gardening. Opportunities for apprenticeship gardening days linked to these.
2) Think
Next set of aims/ priorities. Space to think/ create.
2a) Create Project Plan for Job Interview for Sudbury Community gardening job. (not shared here).
Site Visit 30/1/ 2017 sets off ideas based on experience of place.
Interview next week- what to have with me?
2b) Set dates and aims and just make it a reality.
3) Design/Plan:
the creative process leading to a plan. I.e the crux of this diploma design.
4) Do/ Next Steps:
Use the plan.
3 & 4 THIS IS MY DESIGN. DOING AND WRITING UP THESE STAGES.
How it comes about is what interests me.....
What are the steps to get there? Do I need a project management tool?
October 2017
1) Observe/ Evaluate:
how did it go? how do I feel? What Have I learnt? has the vision changed?
The Grow Your Community Sudbury ( I got the job) project has shown that it is possible to engage volunteers who get a lot out of what they do whilst keeping green spaces looking good. With GP backing this could really develop into the ideas I am also pursuing with Herbaculture.
I start a year of mentorship with the School of Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) with the aim to develop my ideas for prescription herbal gardening and the community health clubs as a social enterprise. Names for it have been Herbacultura, Grow Our Health, Social Herbaculture and now just Herbaculture CIC. My vision is now based on experience....it works....it is possible...But how to get funding?
2) Think
Next set of aims/ priorities. Space to think/ create.
Who are my clients? patient groups, referrals, individuals;
Who are my partners? Activlives, council, GPs;
Where can I access funding? UnLtd, SSE, legal structure to allow funding?;
Im going to live in Bures now.
The SSE year will help and give space to draw up a plan. Get a pilot project. Make it happen.
3) Design/Plan:
the creative process leading to a plan.
The SSE year is to do this planning. Lead to a 2018 Proposal.
4) Do / Next Steps
Use Trello App for my to do lists. tick but not using consistently (UPDATE March 2018 see image below)
Pursue Big Lottery North West Ipswich as an idea. meeting 7th Nov. tick (update March 18 need to talk about pilot having got Unltd funding)
SSE planning will lead me closer to my aims:
- set up as a charity or community interest company in process
- one project up and running by April 2018 planning with big lottery NW IPS
- contact GPs in the area. not until incorporated
- Apply for UnLtd support. (update applied Nov17, into round two 5th jan 2018, got through to pitch stage 17/1/18. update Feb 18 I got it so I have extra funding some of it specifically to help get a pilot project of the ground)

March 2018
1) Observe/ Evaluate:
how did it go? how do I feel? What Have I learnt? has the vision changed?
The methodology is getting into a long list of things to do. So far everything is very encouraging and with the UnLtd funding I am all set to get together my first pilot community health club. I have a few items to do and will include a flow chart below. I am using the project management app Trello to help too.
- I feel that it is all possible now an initial idea is turning into a reality. I am a little anxious about the delivery of the courses as I want them to be life changing for people. I think this is a good reason to use Living Medicine materials as a base and also be aware that these things develop and get tweaked each time you present them.
- I have learnt that funders like what I am doing and will some data to back up what I am doing I think I am onto a big concept here.
- The vision is still being formed and the reality is catching up with legal structure, fliers and websites - the admin stuff getting sorted. The bigger vision of massive social change in attitudes and behaviour is still to be put onto paper.
SWOC: Community Health Clubs
Strengths: Social prescribing and herbal medicine are great partners - the community Health Club has a lot of potential with persona, social and environmental beneficial outcomes. There is interest in new health models and I am getting positive feedback from funders and those that hear what I am trying to do.
Weaknesses: It revolves around just me at the moment. the Herbal Medicine aspect scares insurers and is a point where I can lose people to prejudice. Trouble getting insurance an example of this.
Opportunities: Various connection with community gardens can be revisited with Community Health Clubs and is interesting to them as well as getting new volunteers can be hard. There is a meme and global aspect to this too if successful as others may wish to replicate and an online digital course could be set up.
Constraints: My own anxiety about courses and if Im good enough (lets dispense with this now), the admin side of things which may hold up herbaculture progress and the joint working on other projects. I may also be a little beholden to trends in healthcare and directed where funding takes me rather than being clear what the aims are....

Next set of aims/ priorities. Space to think/ create.
Space to Think/ Create:
I still have the luxury of being away on holiday with these ideas floating in my head. I have the flowchart and trello app to help but I need to reflect as I go. There is the getting admin and business things done. The working out of what events will take place and when....... The creativity comes in the course content and finding multiple solutions. I need to sit and reflect on the process and the ethics and principles along the way.

4) Do/ Next Steps:
Use the plan.
I have a clear route to incorporation, setting up clubs in certain areas and its a matter of getting on with it. I like the idea of the Dragon Dreaming in the previous design to celebrate so a launch event should be held.
I want to have most of the flowchart activated by the end of April and online booking set up for courses and clubs set up in East Anglian Venues. Can I prioritise the venues most likely to succeed? I will start by approaching them and see......
PLUS + MINUS - INTERESTING ?
NW IPSWICH Whitton & Whitehouse
+ links to UnLtd Funding £2000 secured
+ wellbeing group and at last meeting interest was shown
- big cumbersome organisation
- no client group as yet - may need heavy marketing.
? potential for community garden (designing it too)
? hoping to use the £2000 to match fund another £2000
THIS IS FIRST PRIORITY FOR A LONG TERM PROJECT.
NEEDS JOINT WORKING WITH LOCAL PROJECTS AND GROUPS.
IPSWICH Peoples Community Garden & Chantry Walled Garden
+ existing infrastructure of garden, cooking hut and volunteers
+ I worked there so good initial connections
+herb spiral built by BT workers so a good project and link.
- only certain days I can book the space
- hard to find the venue
? how would it overlap with my work with ActivLives
? could I open up a mixed group of referred, locals and business?
A GOOD VENUE FOR A SUFFOLK SOCIAL PRESCRIBING PROJECT
IPSWICH - Quay Place Wellbeing Centre
+ rooms already paid for
- parking an issue
+garden there but small.
+ Suffolk MIND owned building.
- need to change the use of the booking to larger room
? probably best for single issue workshops like mental health
GOOD WORKSHOP VENUE ONLY.
Cressington Temple Barns- BRAINTREE
+ great herb garden
? not sure about room hire
- new group (maybe use the friends group
? perfect when connection in essex made
A GOOD VENUE FOR AN ESSEX SOCIAL PRESCRIBING PROJECT
NORWICH MarlePit Lane Community Garden
+ my herb garden that needs attention
+great outdoor space with community centre nearby
+past clients can help publicise
- distance to organise and travel
? generating enough income to make worthwhile
A GOOD VENUE FOR A NORFOLK SOCIAL PRESCRIBING PROJECT
Dedham Vale - Place for Plants or Flatford FSC Study Centre
+ place for plants has the plant links and the clientel
+ FSC Centre has facilities garden and kudos of Willy Lots House garden.
?could AONB funding help this run?
- I have moved away
? perfect for a weekend workshop
GOOD WORKSHOP VENUE ONLY.
Future Options? Business and Groups using their space or linking to one of these venues. I think that they are all possible with enough time to publicise the events. NW IPSWICH is my pilot priority having received funding for it. If I had to analyse them for the market case for each I would have events online and see which ones attracted folk. Ideally focusing on a long term outcome would be continued peer support after a group, better habits physically and cooking, and connections with outlets for therapeutic self care, gardening areas. So there is a case for a careful choices of venues for community long term benefits. OR good venues for one off events marketed to individuals.
ETHICS AND PRINCIPLES
Can I ensure the Ethics and Principles guide my pricing, access to the courses, content etc. ?

EVALUATION:
DID I MEET MY AIM TO CREATE A COMMUNITY HEALTH CLUB?
- I have got a long way from my initial ideas and I need to ensure I always consider my initial aims of a community health club.
- Run courses on Herbal Medicine
- Help people to get inspired by gardening
- Grow the herbs that help with health
- Inspire the cooking and healthy eating and living with herbs.
- Get support from peers and get a sense of purpose helping your community to grow.
- I have got funding from two sources. I have funding specifically for a pilot
- I have suitable gardens/ venues to carry this out. I also have a readymade course (living medicine) to use or I could create my own.
- I will get there........... I have to. I am trying to link with social prescribing and be part of a partnership but this may delay the launch.
The Community Health Club Idea is rightly taking time to develop and I have been stalling until my insurance came through (had problems with herbal medicine and getting cover). This has held me back but I am now creating a marketing plan to be ready. I have leaflets and I have been networking at local social prescribing conferences. October 18, I got to the end of my year with the school of social entrepreneurs. With the peer support in my mission and time to develop my concept I have grown the initial idea and now can seriously approach GP's Clinical Commissioning Groups and organisations to collaborate. I would conclude that my idea is very much alive but I can't say that that my aims/ goals have been met by setting up the first Community Health Club. I feel I am surfing the wave of interest in Social Prescribing and preventative NHS strategies.
I feel there is a huge future in this so please refer to www.herbaculture.org for updates as I will refine my offer to businesses, communities and funders as time goes on.
REFLECTIONS ON THE ACTION LEARNING CYCLE
Using a Action Learning Cycle was a way to gather up lots of previous ideas I have had in this field. Before writing it up I wasn't sure how to link it all together. I see now. in my design, how action cycling has led to a progression in my ideas.
I think part of this method was to get a handle on what my goals were. I certainly am much more clear about that and I look forward to the first Community Health Club courses.
There are still many tweaks needed so I will bear in mind the process:
OBSERVE THINK PLAN DO in it's simple form. I did do this with DESIGN 6 as well but felt that I wasn't getting anywhere so it can be hard to know how to link in the tools and design process in this cyclical process.
It was important for me to try the Action Learning Cycle. I didn't get taught it but found it online and appropriated it. I think there may be more to it that a way to revisit and idea until it fits. As a design method I like it and it fits the cyclical nature of a long term project that need regular tweaking.
Im note sure how well this design would work for a paying client thought. It feels a little more about a personal journey. Or perhaps a way to keep track on the progress of a project.
At least I am well on track to turning a dream into reality here.
REFLECTIONS OF A PERMACULTURE DESIGN STUDENT
Where am I at now?
I have been using the permaculture diploma as a way to process my life. Things I have wanted to do are getting attention and It feels win win. What I am aware of is the need to do some more land based designs and practice some of the basic tools.
Im glad that there are chances to apply permaculture to life goals so the whole herbaculture project would not have got this far had it not been for this design and the design skills I am learning. I hope to be a credit to the permaculture community once up and running..... I certainly will need to celebrate some of my initial surplus I make to becoming a business member of Permaculture Association Britain.
